Who we are?
Our team is made up of 5 college students ranging from freshman to juniors, and a project director, Linea Palmisano. We began the project because to address a growing need for resources that help undocumented students in Minnesota to pursue higher education. Each team member brings different skills, experiences, and ideas to the project.
We strive for fair consideration of all immigrants in pursuit of higher education. We have focused our work on addressing the lack of information and bad information that currently exists in MN schools around undocumented students' right and means to pursue a college education.
Ulises
Ulises is a college freshman and joined NAVIGATE after learning about it from Juve. He felt he had something to contribute with his website and graphic abilities, and what you are reading right now is the result of his efforts as a beginner! His interest in languages and love for numbers along with the passion of computers lead him to an uneven decision on what to study for a major. But he is thinking to study accounting or international business in which he would be able to use his knowledge of languages, math, and computers. Ulises continues to do outreach as his college schedule allows.
Davis
During high school Davis was involved with an after school organization, ALIANZA, that promotes integration between the Latino and white population at Southwest, and promoted the Minnesota Dream Act. He met Linea Palmisano when she was an assistant coach on the Southwest Cross-country and Track and Field teams, and that is how he joined the NAVIGATE team. He is a sophomore at the University of North Carolina and is studying economics and Spanish. Davis' summer efforts focused on developing the Guide publication (still under legal review), assisting in research, grant writing, and coordination of the many sources and public school administrators whose opinions were sought for this project.
Juve
Juve has volunteered with the Minnesota Immigrant Freedom Network and that is how he became interested in working with NAVIGATE. Juventino produced the scholarship list, focused on public outreach with local nonprofit organizations, and has worked on the video documentary pieces. He is a college freshman, part of his student Senate, and is considering a major that focuses on ESL education. Both Juve and Ulises have volunteered time with Latino clubs of Family and Children's Service organization.
Linea
Linea's experience working with immigrant students comes from her assistance as a running coach at Southwest High School in Minneapolis. After being frustrated with the many barriers and bad information and messages about college for undocumented students, for years, she felt compelled to bring a correct message out to a larger MN audience. Linea volunteers resources, time and management experience, invests a lot of mentorship, and enjoys an extremely energetic and intelligent bunch of students called Team NAVIGATE.
Maria
During high school, Maria was involved in many school activities, including NHS, Student Council, and ALAS, a Latino student association. She is now a Senior, majoring in Psychology and also active in her college's student Senate. She is very connected with community and family organizations, and works on outreach for the project. Maria developed the outreach event pieces and the family-focused materials.
Victor
In high school Victor became involved with lobbying for the MN Dream Act and has spoken at the Minnesota Capital. He became involved with NAVIGATE because he knew Linea when she coached with the Cross-country and Track and Field teams at
Southwest. Victor is currently a sophomore studying biology and is considering teaching high school and runs varsity athletics on Cross-country and Track and Field teams. Victor produced many of the video documentary snapshots of student stories, and worked with Davis in seeking input from public school staff. He continues to volunteer his time at Richfield H.S. with the Latino club in collaboration with Family and Children's Service organization. Sean
Sean got involved in project NAVIGATE because of his video editing experience. Sean is studying engineering at the University of St. Thomas where he also participates in Track and Field.
