Presentation at MCAN Conference "Access to Higher Education for Immigrant Students in Minnesota: NAVIGATE project and Local Policy Updates".
The Minnesota College Access Network, led by Jennifer Godinez, had a breakout panel discussion with the Latino Scholarship Fund, the MN Immigrant Freedom Network, and NAVIGATE panelists. This session was facilitated by Maureen Cisneros of the UMn Board of Regents. Approximately 25 MN educational leaders were there. Access to higher education for undocumented immigrant youth is one of the country's leading education equity issues. Students who have been attending K-12 Minnesota schools almost their entire lives, are academically prepared to attend Minnesota higher education institutions, then reach the college application process and "hit the brick wall" of not understanding, or having advisors who understand, how to navigate the process as an immigrant youth. The session was designed for educators facing the same question, "What are the 'different steps' immigrant youth must take to access higher education in Minnesota?" Nov. 13, 2007
Carrie Carroll of Augsburg Admissions presents to Latino youth at Harding High School, St. Paul, MN with Juventino of NAVIGATE. Tips and stories of navigating the college admissions process and scholarship information.

August Recap After a packed summer of work activity, and the first outreach event at La Feira, a family Latino fair on Lake Street at the Farmer's market, the team underwent an extensive evaluation by a Steering Group that included participation from funding sponsors and other interested organizations and individuals that are part of increasing educational access. It was valuable to those presenting and provided an opportunity, some for the first time, to create community around the issue of educational equity for undocumented students from union leaders, nonprofit organizations, scholarship foundations, and college administration. |
